Mission Office/Montreal- Week 15
This week, we drove some more of the new cars around. On Thursday night, the sisters in my district saw some people trying to break into the cars, so Elder Fife and Elder Gordon, the APs, asked us to help them shuffle the remaining cars at the office to the Papineau chapel. It was a thrilling experience and we didn't get back until 10:22pm. We thought it unwise of the people to be breaking into the cars considering the mission office is between two police stations.
Other than that, we got some calls about cockroaches and rats this week, but the worse one was when I got a call about bed bugs in Newfoundland. Initially, I thought the best thing to do would be just put them with other elders close by. That is what happened to me when some elders in Ottawa got bed bugs, but when we told President Low, he said to put them in a hotel. So, I booked a hotel room this week for the first time in my life.
Recently Elder Brown was thinking more about the members in Newfoundland that we are technically still assigned to. So, we called the young men in that branch (the Corner Brook branch) and played kahoot with them over zoom for young mens this week. The young men of that branch consists of two brothers. I was surprised how well kahoot worked and that there was no lag for them. Yeah, so, just a casual Friday night in Montreal playing kahoot with some hommies a brick away in Newfoundland.
We got the announcement to go into phase 1 as far as missionaries, so we had district council this week in person but we had to wear masks. I dreaded wearing a mask and felt like the whole thing was such a drag. Masks became required by Quebec on the 18th of July.
There has also been a big push to start doing community service but not service to help members which is rough. There are 3 or 4 families moving in the Montreal ward and they asked for help but we are not allowed to. We can however go volunteer at food bank. Elder Brown and I signed up for this coming week, but then realized we had zone conference so I called some other missionaries to take our place. I was disappointed to give up going to the food bank especially for just another meeting where I will have to sit there wearing a masks. I feel like all I do is just go to meetings and wear a sweaty muzzle.
We also moved some sisters this week because it seemed like them or their car was being targeted. First, they saw some scratch their car and then their car was attempted to be broken into to and the whole door had to be replaced. A week or so later, they discovered that someone had covered the car in fried chicken bones. There was another empty apartment nearby that used to be senior couple missionaries so we just moved the beds and while we did that, they bought us dinner so it was a good deal.
Sister Little wanted to celebrate pioneer day so she bought several packs of these enormous Costco hot dogs and started telling every missionary on the planet to come by on Friday at 12pm. The hot dog I ate was really great.
We have been reading the bicentennial proclamation with the members we call with and in the last call we did, the member said that nothing stuck out to him because nothing in the proclamation was new information. Elder Brown and I then pointed out to him that it was significant and meaningful that amidst all the changes that have happened in church in the last few years, our prophet is proclaiming what has not changed, our faith. In a similar way, everyone deals with different life experiences and hardships, but regardless of life struggle, the answer is always to rely on Jesus Christ and have faith in him.
